Out and about in Fort William and Lochaber

Things to see and do in the area

There are lots of places to visit and see in this beautiful area of Scotland.

Fort William is all about stunning scenery and outdoor pursuits. Whether you visit during summer or winter “The Outdoor Capital of the UK” is a mecca for all outdoor enthusiasts.

For the energetic, walk the tourist path to the summit of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain and enjoy the spectacular views across to the Nevis Range Ski Resort or back down Glen Nevis.

Alternatively for the less energetic, take the Nevis Range Gondola from Aonach Mor (just 7 miles [11.2km] north of Fort William along the A82) and enjoy the views across Lochaber whilst having some lunch in the Snowgoose restaurant, perhaps after taking one of the 3 nature trails along the summit.

There is a very enjoyable drive along Glen Nevis to the lower and upper falls, past the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre and you are sure to see local highland cattle grazing by the river.

Take a trip along the West Coast either by car along the picturesque “Road to the Isles” finishing at the port of Mallaig or take the train and cross the famous Glenfinnan viaduct – as seen in the Harry Potter movie. During the summer season, the Jabobite Steam Train runs along this route. A visit to the Mallaig Marine World is well worth while, or hop on the ferry across the sea to Skye.

Neptune’s Staircase at Banavie, (3 miles/ 4.8km) offers the best views of the Nevis Range mountains and many boats navigating the 7 lock gates from sea level to and from the upper Caledonian Canal.

Alternatively, stop off en route at Treasures of the Earth, Corpach, before continuing the drive to theGlenfinnan Visitor Centre and discover the history behind Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Uprising. During the summer there are options of boat trips down Loch Shiel or continue by car to the wonderful beaches around Arisaig and Morar before reaching Mallaig.

From Arisaig Harbour the day trip to the isles of Rum or Eigg is a must – enjoy the superb seascapes and have a really good day out (book in advance).
